Safra Ada Catz, an American billionaire banker and tech executive, stands as a prominent leader in the realms of technology and finance. Born on December 1, 1961, in Holon, Israel, her journey to becoming the CEO of Oracle Corporation is a testament to her unyielding dedication and resilience.

A Global Odyssey: Israel to the United States

Safra Catz’s narrative unfolds in Holon, Israel, where she was born to Jewish parents, her father being an immigrant from Romania. Her family moved to Brookline, Massachusetts, when she was six. Despite her relocation, Catz’s commitment to excellence remained unwavering. After graduating from Brookline High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1983. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1986.

From Banking to Tech Leadership

Catz’s illustrious career in finance took root at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, where she served as a managing director from February 1997 to March 1999 and a senior vice president from January 1994 to February 1997. Her journey in investment banking started in 1986, paving the way for her entry into Oracle as a senior vice president in 1999.

Catz played a pivotal role in Oracle’s 2005 acquisition of software rival PeopleSoft in a $10.3 billion takeover. Beyond her tenure at Oracle, she served as a non-executive director of Oracle subsidiary Hyperion Solutions and as a director of PeopleSoft Inc. and Stellent Inc.

Safra Catz’s influence extends beyond her professional roles. Fortune recognised her as the 12th most powerful woman in business in 2009, and Forbes ranked her 16th in 2009 and 24th in 2014 among the most powerful businesswomen. In 2011, she was the highest-paid woman among Fortune 1000 companies, earning an estimated US$51,695,742 in total remuneration.
