India observes National Technology Day on May 11th each year to honour key achievements in science and technology. This day marks India’s rise as a global leader in technological innovation, notably highlighted by successful nuclear tests at Pokhran in 1998. The event emphasises the crucial role of technology in India’s development journey.

The aim of National Technology Day is to encourage young people to explore careers in technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It also promotes partnerships between schools, industries, and government to discuss emerging trends and innovative solutions to societal issues.

Origin and Evolution

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared May 11th as National Technology Day to commemorate the historic Pokhran nuclear tests. The first celebration occurred on May 11, 1999, organized by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This event aimed to recognise India’s dynamic technological achievements and the contributions of professionals in the field.

Since then, India has celebrated National Technology Day annually on May 11th. As we approach National Technology Day 2024, which falls on a Saturday this year, excitement builds for a day of reflection and celebration.

Significance and Celebrations

National Technology Day holds immense significance for India’s development. It celebrates the dedication and creativity of scientists, engineers, and innovators driving the country’s technological progress.
