Chitra Ramkrishna, born in 1963, gained prominence as the former CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), India’s premier stock exchange. While her career in the financial industry showcased notable accomplishments, it also faced legal challenges and controversies that grabbed headlines.

A Career Defined by Achievements

Chitra Ramkrishna’s venture into the financial sector began in 1985 as a chartered accountant at the project finance division of the Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI). Swift career progression led her to spend two years at the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), where she gained valuable regulatory experience.

Returning to IDBI after her SEBI stint, Chitra Ramkrishna deepened her financial industry knowledge. Her dedication and talent earned her recognition, culminating in April 2013 when she succeeded Ravi Narain as the Managing Director and CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), a significant milestone in her career.

Controversies and Legal Wrangles

Chitra Ramkrishna’s tenure at the NSE, while highlighting her leadership and managerial prowess, also brought her under the spotlight due to legal challenges.

Co-location Case

In 2016, Chitra Ramkrishna became entangled in a co-location case, raising serious concerns about market fairness and integrity. She was held guilty and instructed by SEBI to disgorge 25 per cent of her salary from the fiscal year 2013-14 to the Investor Protection and Education Fund (IPEF). Additionally, she faced a five-year prohibition from associating with a listed company or any market infrastructure institution.

‘Himalayan Yogi’ Case

A fresh controversy emerged in February 2022 when SEBI disclosed that Chitra Ramkrishna had been receiving advice from an unidentified ‘Himalayan yogi’ for two decades. This revelation triggered investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), alleging the leaking of critical business information related to day-to-day operations. The investigation led to her arrest by the CBI on March 7, 2022.

The Path Forward

Chitra Ramkrishna’s noteworthy career in India’s financial sector reached its zenith by leading the NSE. However, the legal challenges and controversies have raised questions about her legacy.

As legal proceedings unfold, the outcomes will shape the trajectory of her life and career. Chitra Ramkrishna’s narrative serves as a poignant reminder of the intricate challenges faced by individuals in leadership roles, particularly in the highly regulated and scrutinised financial industry.
